JULY 01-03

Tuesday  July 1st - Another hot and sunny day. We were all very sad as Jennifer and family packed up to go. The boys enjoyed some play-time with 2 boys close to their age at a neighboring campsite before they had to leave. It was so nice to see them have playmates close to their ages. Michael and I were fighting the blues as we packed up Yogi and Boo-boo and moved 62 miles to our next campsite Silver Springs Camping in Saco, Maine. We set up camp then headed straight out to explore Kennebunkport, Maine. It is the town where the Bush family has summered beginning with the maternal grandparents of President H.W. Bush. We walked the sidewalks of the beautiful coastal, historic town and visited 2 parks; Heaven Swamp Park and Blowing Cave Park. We especially enjoyed Blowing Cave Park with its’ beautiful rock formations that cause dramatic wave crashes and sea spray. From the park you also had a great view of the Bush family home. During our time in Kennebunkport we received word from Jennifer that unfortunately their travel home had not gone well with delayed and canceled flights leaving their home arrival around 3:00am Wednesday (they left the campsite at 9:00am Tuesday). Ugh! We stopped at the grocery on the way back to Yogi, did laundry, had dinner then turned in for the night.

Wednesday  July 2nd - It was a hot and sunny day. We started our adventures by going to the community of Cape Elizabeth. Our first stop there was at the Two Light State Park where we saw 2 quaint light houses both located now in residential areas bordering the park. The park was right on the ocean with huge, impressive rock formations and crashing waves. Our next stop in Cape Elizabeth was at the Fort Williams State Park. It was a large park with old gun batteries from Old Fort Williams, lighthouse museum, a lighthouse and walking paths along the ocean front. We really enjoyed visiting the lighthouse; Portland Head Light, the first lighthouse built in Maine (1791). It was frequently visited by poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and was the inspiration for his poem “The Lighthouse”. It is still in operation. The park also had the ruins of an old mansion; Goddard Mansion. It was initially the home of a prominent merchant when completed in 1858 then served as the home of married servicemen and their families in 1898. After leaving the community of Cape Elizabeth we drove to the community of Portland, ME. Our first stop there was the Old Port region which was as the name suggests; the old port. The streets and sidewalks were cobblestone and brick. The buildings were beautifully restored and maintained. We also walked down to the current harbor where the Dimillos high-class Floating Restaurant is located along with multi-million dollar yachts for sale. We carefully stepped around the Porsche as we navigated the dock to get back to the low rent district and perused all the charter boats for seal and whale watches. Next we went to the Eastern Promenade Waterfront Park and sat on a bench to watch the beautiful ocean view, enjoy the breeze and watch the children play nearby. Our next stop was a Bug Light Park. It had a memorial to the shipbuilders of the region which had been a major source of industry during WWII. It also had a very pretty lighthouse named Portland Breakwater Lighthouse built in 1875 with a unique style inspired by architecture from Athens. We finished our visit to Portland by climbing the tower of the Portland Observatory. The view was fabulous and the breeze felt wonderful after a hot day! We could see many of the sights we had just visited from a different perspective. Back to Yogi we went after a fun day to get ready for our move to Acadia in the morning.

Thursday  July 3rd - Moving day. We drove 198 miles to Bar Harbor Campground in Bar Harbor, Maine close to Acadia National Park. On the way we stopped in Bangor, ME to see the SPOOKY HOUSE of author Stephen King. We also stopped at Costco and Target for supplies. While in the Acadia Ntl. Park area we will enjoy a visit from Jay and Marta so we wanted extra yummy foods. We set up camp, ate dinner and made plans for the next day.
