JUNE 18 - 20

Wednesday  June 18th - We drove   miles to Ashby, MA right on the border of NH where we set up camp at The Pines Campground. Our campsite was beautiful; surrounded by pine trees and on a rocky stream. We went into town to do laundry before settling in to work on the blog and plan for the next day.

Thursday  June 19th - The day was sunny and very hot and humid. We started with a hike at Monadnock Park in New Hampshire. It was a very difficult trail; steep, rocky and slippery. We were accustomed to long, steep hikes but rocky, slippery trails…not fun. Michael did fine with the terrain but Dana was not happy. We turned back about half-way to the summit. It was entertaining to watch the children and young people on the trail scurrying up like little squirrels! We stopped at the Visitors Center on the way out and enjoyed looking at the exhibits. We were so surprised to see it takes chewing gum 1 million years to biodegrade. Next we went to Miller State Park where we were able to drive to the summit and take in the beautiful view. We could see several interesting landmarks to include: Mt. Monadnock, Vermont, Mt. Washington, and Boston Space Base. We stopped for some yummy ice cream, stopped for needed supplies, then went home to Yogi after another fun day.

Friday   June 20th - The weather was beautiful; sunny and not too hot. The first thing on the agenda was a visit to the Andres Institute of Art. It was a hidden treasure of sculptures from artists around the world. They were placed throughout a hilly forest along trails and were made of stone and/or metals. We spent hours meandering through the forest discovering the hidden gems. Next we went on a tour of the Anheuser Busch Brewery. It was excellent. Our guide was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. She was the longest employed person at that location and obviously loved her job. Interesting facts we learned included; Anheuser-Busch delivered the first case of beer after prohibition to the White House and the Clydesdales became famous with that event because they were pulling the delivery wagon, Anheuser- Busch became a business team first but then a family team when Anheuser’s daughter married Busch, there are 12 Anheuser-Busch facilities around the US, the one in Merrimack, NH was opened in 1970 but Anheuser-Busch started operations in 1852 in St. Louis, MO, and they had 135 fermenting tanks in Merrimack that each held the equivalent of 250,000 cases of beer that they distribute regularly (approximately every 6 weeks) throughout New England. At the end of the day we returned to Yogi for dinner, blogging and relaxation and prepared for our move the next morning.
